You only need to exhibit versatility if you want fish in Gold Lakes Basin Recreation Area.
You’ll find trails and roads both provide access to the memorable scenery, cool weather and fine fishing on the boundary of
Plumas and Sierra counties high above
the Middle Fork of the Feather River and
the North Yuba River.
Brown, brook, rainbow, Mackinaw and even golden trout delight bank, boat and hike-in fishermen. Fine lodges at Sardine Lake , a hundred road-access campsites and a scattering of backpacker sites near lakes and streams satisfy lodging requirements.
Some resorts have
meals and convenient shops for
last-minute needs. Few other California areas offer so many kinds of trout in such diverse water that’s convenient to road
and camp. But it’s the fishing that pulls visitors back year after year. F

our lake. Boat rentals are available.. The road to Upper Sardine Lake seems to get rougher and narrower each year; it’s not for cars or trailered boats.
Frisky fishermen hike up the road, then follow the inlet stream up to Young America Lake where lively, if typically small, golden trout lurk. Golden trout addicts also fish across Highway 49 at Deadman Lake in the shadow of Dead- man Park. Nearby Saxonia Lake didn‘t produce last we had tried it.
Packer Lake Road leads, logically, to Packer Lake. Hit the water at first light and have a limit of brooks and browns by seven in the morning, or start late and fish all day. Fishermen often troll or fish bait in
this rather small sheltered lake. The
picnic spots on the shore offer a
favorite spot to watch the action or
laze away the day.
Packer Lake used to be stocked with rainbows every other weekv This year l2- to 14-inch long brook trout seem the usual stocked fish. Brook trout can, of course, spawn in waters without inlet streams. Two “spillover” unimproved areas along Packer Lake Road handle campers
Oregon and California hunting and fishing maps of hunting clubs, hunting ranches, public
